In 2003, Cloudbreak Health built the award-winning video remote interpreting solution, Martti, to revolutionize how limited English proficient, deaf, and hard of hearing patients interact with healthcare workers through interpreters available 24/7. Now, we’ve improved Martti and developed more solutions to connect providers with patients anywhere, at any time, and in any language.
Our new solutions, like Cloudbreak’s inpatient Telemed service, enable you to tackle care disparities in more ways. And all of our solutions include native integration with Martti, so you always have qualified medical interpreters available at your fingertips.
What’s New with Martti?
You know and trust Martti. We offer qualified interpreters 24/7 in over 250+ languages. Now, Martti’s critical interpreting services are accessible across the entire health system with the touch of a button. Martti has redefined interoperable video remote interpreting (VRI) in healthcare, seamlessly integrating with a multitude of platforms including Zoom, Epic, and Caregility. This is important because interoperability increases access to the industry’s most qualified interpreters. It gives patients peace of mind and places Martti everywhere it needs to be.
What is VRI?
Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) is a video telecommunication service to access real-time signed or spoken language interpretation through interpreters located in satellite call centers or other remote locations. While VRI is most commonly used within medical settings, it’s an effective communication tool for other environments like educational, legal, business, etc.
How has Martti improved?
The latest Martti platform is built on new architecture and delivers enhanced HD video, multi-party calling, a sleek user interface, and sought-after user features. Check out the details here.
What does interoperability mean?
Interoperability is the idea that digital solutions should work together, not independently. Our ability to integrate with existing platforms is another way we promote health equity, first and foremost. We believe video remote interpreting should be available anywhere you need it, and with Martti, it can be. Our products are available through the Cloudbreak web and application offering as well as through other healthcare solutions like Epic, Zoom, Amwell, Caregility, Blue Jeans, and more.
Why is the Martti website gone?
Martti is a solution developed and provided by Cloudbreak. To make things easy, we’ve consolidated our websites into one at www.martti.us. In addition to superior language interpretation services, we also offer telehealth and inpatient technology solutions. Our website showcases how language access with Martti impacts every aspect of the patient experience.
I don’t need the other services offered by Cloudbreak. Can I just use Martti?
Of course! We’re dedicated to finding the right solution for you. Martti seamlessly integrates with your existing telehealth, EHR, and patient experience platforms to help enhance your existing investments. You can also employ Martti as a stand-alone, bedside solution. When you are ready to expand into telehealth or inpatient services, let us know!
Interpretation
You know Martti, you understand video remote interpreting, but you still have some questions. No worries, we’ve got the answers.
What is the difference between interpretation vs. translation?
Interpretation refers to converting spoken and sign languages into other spoken or sign languages. Translation means converting written text from one language into written text of another language. While these two professions both deal with converting one language into another, they require different skill sets, training, and methodologies. Cloudbreak utilizes interpretation for live video sessions with patients and healthcare workers.
How qualified are Martti interpreters?
We don’t look for just language proficiency when recruiting our interpreters. We look for passion. That’s because it’s not easy to become a Martti interpreter. We require our staff to complete 80 hours of training in their first year and an additional 10 hours of training annually. Additionally, we keep our team at the forefront of the industry with medical terminology, relevant news, and cultural training. Further, our internal Quality Assurance team regularly audits calls, provides helpful tips, and creates relevant programs to empower our interpreters to be their very best.
How do I work with an interpreter?
Having language services as part of a telehealth solution is imperative in order to serve as many patients as possible. Further, conducting remote interpretation well is also vital for each session’s success and for better patient outcomes.
Here are some guidelines for interpreters and providers working together via telehealth. You can find our full list of guidelines here.
For providers:
- If working with a team of providers, select one as moderator for the call to ensure that all participants take turns speaking/signing.
- Be aware that device settings/controls may look different for the interpreter and the patient.
- Keep the device fixed to ensure that the interpreter and any users that sign can always see each other.
- Prepare to give patients guidance on navigating the platform.
- Since you won’t have all the typical visual cues, pay even more attention than usual to your patient’s and interpreter’s tones of voice during remote sessions.
- Speak slowly and clearly, and pause frequently. Like any other care team member, the interpreter may ask for repetition or clarification.
For interpreters:
- Give a pre-session or briefing like you normally would.
- Remind participants to take turns speaking, and to speak or sign slowly and clearly, with frequent pauses.
- If you can’t see the patient, ask the provider to reposition the device.
- Prepare to interpret an informed consent for telehealth services if needed.
How has Martti and interpretation adjusted to COVID-19?
In the past, the interpreter was likely the only remote participant in a VRI session. Now, especially with COVID-19 prevention practices, both patients and providers often join VRI sessions remotely. Enter the telehealth solution: all parties can join remotely from different sites, even if the provider and patient are just down the hall from each other.
